Agrarian Change from the 1582 Survey to the 1751 Sederunt
This book describes change on the Hornby Castle estates from about 1580 to the middle of the eighteenth century. It is clear that these changes were partly driven by events within the estates - particularly the power struggles between the lord of the manor and his tenants. However external events such as the Civil War and economic factors such as the ever increasing livestock trades or the transfer of the hemp cloth trade to Lancaster also had their effect.
‘[T]he introductory section preceding the transcribed documents excels itself in its extent (224 pages) and its quality. … [T]his is a splendid piece of work which is clearly written, well bound on quality paper and will provide source material for students of agricultural and rural history, as well as those interested in vernacular architecture and social change.’ Agricultural History Review, 67 (2019), 139-40
